• Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. If hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) can be isolated from the patient, corrected and transplanted back into the bone marrow of the patient, the disease could be cured
• At birth, HSC can be isolated from the umbilical cord in sufficient quantities to treat a young child
